8. A National Park

In 1919, the United States Congress authorized the expansion of the Grand Canyon from a national monument to a national park. The creation of the national park was an early success for the growing conservation movement in the United States. Conservationists used the canyon’s new national park status to help stop the creation of a dam on the Colorado River within the park boundaries.
